Not quite, the extra wood is like a key in a groove you cut into the edge, (or biscuits) to help line up the face and keep it smooth while the glue is drying. The diagnal cut from top to bottom is put back together only having slid along the cut a few inches. Use a scrap of paper to see how it will look, use a 1' = 1" scale, or try it on a scrap of wood first. Good luck, James.
