ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I recently bought an antique oak bed (3/4) for our second bedroom. Only problem is that the rails are not long enough to accomodate a double matress. The current length of the rails are 71 inches - I need to extend the rails to 75 inches. Are there any tricks to this? Or should I simply build new ones?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
