I'm not sure what went wrong, but all is not lost. You can reverse polish the fron with denatured alchol on and clean dotton rags. Work genly and lift off the new coat and soften relay the old coat at the same time. Done carefully you can end up with a piece that looks great and might or might not need to recoated with more shellac.
