shellac recoat

I am refinishing an old dresser, c. 1920's. Tested the finish and found it was shellac. The top was in poor condition so I stripped the finish, stained and recoated with orange shellac. Excellent results. Then I decided to recoat the front of the drawers with a new coat of shellac as the old finish was starved looking. I scuff sanded the old finish and recoated with the fresh shellac (a 3# cut mixed five months ago). The old finish bubbled. What did I do wrong? thanks.
