ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Aging metal screws

I'm restoring an old music box which has nickel-plated hinges and screws. Some of the screws are missing and the remaining ones are too short to hold the heavy top. Neither brass nor zinc screws really look appropriate.

Is there a "home-grown" way to "age" a zinc-coated screw to dull the shine?

Thanks in advance
