I have a book titled "Restoring Antique Tools" by Herbert P. Kean that covers re-japenning old planes. Basically he says that you can still get a tar based japan from a few tool dealers by inquiring to some old tool clubs. He also says that as a substitue you can purchase Sherwin-Williams "High Heat Black" spray paint #1614 (Krylon) which he considers a good simulation of the original finnish. I have used this and it works well although I never re-paint old planes if they have any collectible value as they are always reduced in value by repainting. I do howerver often do this for the more common old planes that I use in my shop. Hope this is helpful.....Tom Dew
