Terry. these sound like the same stains and rings I have seen on other marble tops. I don't think that they would be the result of someone's attempt to remove the stain, but the result of the chemical in the bottle. There were many strong chemilals in some medecines, acids from lemon juice will eat stone over time. Lye was used a lot back then and it or a dry cell battery could have leaked onto the stone. People could have left the furniture a long time and found the acid damage when they returned years later, or if the chemicval had not been cleaned off it would continue to etch into the stone till it is exhausted. Are the rings smooth or rough to the touch? That will tell you weather they were the result of physical activity, rough - acid etch. If you think a chemical has caused this damage you may wast to neutralise the chemical with distilled water and backing soda as a paste, leave the mix covered with plastic to legnthen the effect.
