marble stains

I have a marble top sideboard that has some dark gray ring-like stains on the white marble. There are three of them, and they look as if someone set a hot bowl or pan on it. I don't know if heat can stain marble. The rings also are slightly indented into the marble, as if someone may have tried to buff them out. Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove these stains? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
