ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Protecting an antique table

I am considering buying a beautiful round pedestal tiger oak antique table for my breakfast nook. The table needs a good cleaning, but I also want to protect it from the everyday use we'll subject it to in our home. I've read a million places that polyuruthane is not the right thing to do to an antique. How do I protect it from our meals, occasional spills, and the endless presence of PlayDoh? I don't want to buy something that's going to be a maintenance nightmare. Thanks for your advice.
