I guess that I would try to fill the open spaces with more placter or spackel. If some pieces are removable I would reset them with a wood glue, or hide glue, just so that it is reversable. Hide glue is possibly the better choice by me since it can be rejoined later with fresh glue, no clean off or scraping needed. As for filling up the spaces you may be able to draw the plaster into the open spaces with a vacum and a bit of aquarim hose and the old stand-by, Duck Tape. Use the tape to secure the small hose to the vacum cleaner, place the small hose at one side of the crack and the plaster should be pulled through the crack. A bit of tape to control where the suction draws from will help, also take a piece of soft wire and pound it flat on one end, this will make a nice thin spatula for pushing the plaster in the voids. When the plaster starts to dry you can scrape off the excess, light sand when dry.
