ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Restoring the finish on antique table

I recently rescued an old 3 board pine top table with oak legs from the old family homeplace. It had been in the barn for decades where it was exposed to weather extremes, used to butcher hogs, etc. There are a few tiny remnants of paint on the table, but mostly the old pine top looks dingy, dry and the feel of the top is rough. There are a few oily stains perhaps from the times it was used as a butcher table. I would like to clean the table and bring out the beauty of the wood without ruining any value it may have. I would say it is over 100 years old (made by my great grandfather with square nails). How would you recommend cleaning the table without damaging it further or removing the flecks of paint....and after cleaning, how do I smooth down the raised grain and rough edges and bring out the beauty of the wood? Thanks for the help!
