ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I have an oak table, with birds talons, holding glass balls, for feet. I would like to know what this table is called? My primary question concerns a crack that extends the entire width of the table top. The table top may be 18" square (I don't have the table with me), and I would like to know how to repair it without destroying the finish, or having the glue, or whatever I use, showing on the surface. I would also like to maintain the value, if it has any, of the table. I haven't been able to display this table until recently, I'm moving into a new house and I'm going to have room to display this table. Can anyone help me?
