Unfortunately you have fallen into the tung oli morass of misinformation. Tung oil is permanent! You can get it to take a wax, and a dark wax will help fill the grain, but the sad truth is that tung is for deep penetration. If you soaked the table top in solvent for hours it would return from deep in the wood. As a result any finish will shed in time and leave bare spots. Sorry!
