Most cleaning can be done with just a lemon oil polish. I don't care for solutions that contain water such as Murphys Oil soap, I have seen a lot of damage that stuff can do to old finishes. It sounds like you have a Pledge build-up, paint thinner or Naptha solvent will take the build-up off with out damaging the finish. Keep rubbing the thinner on and then take it off with a clean paper towel, looking to see if the towel is clean. When the old polish has been completly removed the finish sill squeek beneath your fingers. After this I would polish the finish with a cream polish such as Bristol Polish once a week for a month, or else put on a coat of Bri Wax(Toulene Free)version. But the wax is more work. Good luck, Jim.
