These are platters, not planters, right? They could be coated with shellac, or so it seems to me. I would use 320 grit not 220 sand paper. Steel wool (oooo) would work as well, however if they clean up nicely with the steel wool you could just wax them with a paste wax. I use a dark toluene free wax, so as to get some of the patina back. If additional finish is required, get some fresh shellac, sand lightly, clean with paint thinner and recoat. Buff with 0000 steel wool and then wax and buff out. Should look plate great!
