Hello Jim and Peter,
Thank you both for this sound advice. Progress has definitely been made and this otherwise undistinguished hunk of old pine is really quite pretty. If I had realized just what a project I had on my hands, I would have taken before and after pics. The darn thing also has copper detail on the drawers--hey, maybe it was more of a "find" than I thought at first.
THe only really bad and unfixable thing I might have on my hands is the (horrors!) worm damage fix that I'd used before connecting with this site. Unfortunately I didn't know that plain old cellulose fill (white!) wouldn't pick up stain. I wince every time I see it but I assume there isn't much to be done now.
