We are in the process of refinishing my husbands, grandmothers old dining room table and chairs. My husbands aunt who is 78 remembers when the set was brought to the house, by horse and cart,so it must have some age to it. The table had been left in her old house and has had severe water damage over the years from a leaking roof. It was covered with at least 4 layers of paint. We have completly stripped the table down to the bare wood, the veneer has bowed up on the ends and in the center there are raised areas with splits in the veneer. What would be the best way to repair these areas? The legs to the table are large, round, with grooves cut into them all the way around. Starting at the top of the leg, they are large, then narrow down to a small leg, then blossom into a large round foot.(if that makes sense). We have stipped those also. The chairs have the same amount of paint, we have not begun to strip them. They have square leather pieces in the center of the seat, held down with what looks like brass tacks. How should we strip the leather, or is it impossible to save it. Where would we find leather to replace it? I know this is a long post but I want to try to find the best way. By the way the table turned out to be this beautiful dark wood, why anyone would ever cover it with paint is beyond me.
