ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

My husband's grandmother has an antique dining room table that has a large deep scratch on it (it is in to the wood). I believe the wood is mahogany. What should I do to repair it? Or can it be repaired with destroying it? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
