ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I have a very old wood, leather covered trunk. I want to begin using it as an occasional table or foot stool. Its quite large and is filled with albums I want easily accessable. But how do I get the old trunk to look attractive? I've heard that taking the leather off and going down to wood is good. But I'm reluctant to do that in case the wood is not attractive at all. Any suggestions would help.
