ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Dehyrated wood

I have a chiffarobe that belonged to my great grandfather, my mother started to refinish it but she only got as far as stripping it down then it has set out in a storage house for at least five years and the wood looks very dry. What do I need to do to it before putting another finish on it? I'm not sure what kind of wood it is but isn't a dark wood if that helps. Thanks so much for any suggestions.
