I think there will be no great loss in value if you must replace the putty when it is exhausted. Some will simply remove and replace what is falling out, adding a glazing point at the same time. A matching color of acrylic paint can be used to hide the new putty if it is too obvious and offensive. The idea of replacing that which was expected to wear out can't be helped, but if you can give it an old look at the same time that will be a nice feature. a little tooling or a bit of thinner on a brush to soften the shape may be a good idea, and then some dark shellac, when well dried, for a patinaed look.
