As James suggests the glass may be the best answer because it will protect best...if it is enameled then an acrylic enamel topcoat would be the best clear coat....clean well with a solvent to remove waxes and oils/contamination....lacquer over enamel is ill advised because the enamel is Alkyd based and far more flexible than the lacquer which will tend to crack when applied over a more elastic finish.
