Protective coat for lacquered enamel chest

I just bought a beautiful old chest from a thrift store. It is black enamel with a red design on it. I'm not sure whether or not it is laquered. I'm planning to use it as a coffee table, but first would like to put some sort of protective coat on it. What should I use?
