Stripping and re-finishing a mahogany mantel

I have an in-situ late 1880's mahogany fireplace surround and mantle, very ornate, and covered in layers of paint. What's the best way to go about stripping and refinishing it? I have started with Jasco paste stripper, which is taking off the flat areas really well, but the detailed carvings are a mess. Also, when all the paint is off, then what? How should I go about finishing the wood?
