I believe that oils like the two you mentioned are ingredients in paints and varnishes and they do, absolutely harden. They are reffered to as "long oils"..Asphaltum is essentialy coal tar dissolved and suspended in an oil vehicle...a different animal..Danish oils and formulations like Watco, with polymerizers and driers added, will also harden. If they didn't they would be pretty useless in finishes. And of course finishing over them would be disasterous. Lemon oil "cleaners" and Almond oil based products are not the same and I referred to them as "oil based" because they are non drying oils and solvents (mineral oils, silicones, lemon oil) designed to "freshen up a finish" and clean it in one magic application. A product that is comprised mostly of oils of any kind, is to me, an "oil based" product. But there are distinctly different types of oils ...drying and non drying, just to clarify.
