In Response To: Help! I ruined my antique table. (Lindy)

Tell us a little more about the piece...it sounds as if what you have had just a wax finish on it and all the products you've listed have some what of a solvent base with oils, which would soften the wax and dilute it while smearing it around and making a mess of it....whomever gave you that advice probably was not correct.I think that an oil based product is what you DON'T want to put on this table top at this point....they always look great when wet and first applied, but if you smear oil on most any peice of wood it'll look great while wet...this doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do. It definately depends on what the finish is to begin with, and you need to determine that before deciding what actions to take. I guess I'm confused...you said it looked great, why would you take steel wool, and all those other drastic measures to a surface that looked great. Sounds like a simple paste waxing would have been in order.
