The typewriter remained on the shelf when it was in the stowed position. Most of the shelves had a small rim around 3 sides usually in the 1-2 inch high range. It not only kepth the taypewriter from sliding off, but filled the space on the sides and back when the self was up for use since they did not come up level with the desk top. All of these shelves that I have seen were built in from the factory.
