First strip the paint off. Sometimes dark paints that are left in the grain can look like the natural dark grain after refinishing. Most of the time you will have to take a stiff bristle brush and a lot of elbow grease clean the paint out of the grain when it is still soft from the paint stripper. Then refinish.
