You have a good concept for the piece, I would suggest 00 steel wool prior to stripping, as the abrasive action will grind off a lot of the silicone before stripping. Vacuum and wipe completely and wash off the dust with a paint thinner, at least for the top, this will remove much of the silicone right off the bat. Once you have the finish off wash down the wood with acetone and toss the wipe each time to loosen more silicone, then sand and wash again with lacquer thinner. A dewaxed shellac is best, and the oils in Natural Watco Danish Oil Stain will not darken as will regular boiled linseed oil. I resist poly as it is not the best for polishing and recoating once cured, and scratches with no ease of repair. A brushing lacquer is a possible alternative, also oil varnish for extreme situations.
