James:

A couple of quick questions for you. Let's suppose that the desk has been exposed to Pledge over many years and I strip the existing finish off completely. I would like to use a transparent oil stain and use a shellac sealer to hopefully prevent fish eye or contaminiation from silicone residue. Would the order of operations be to use the transparent stain, then the sealer (I'm considering the Zinsser SealCoat no wax)? Would two coats of the sealer be appropriate?

Finally, I have not quite decided on the top finish. I have experimented with spar polyurethane on a pine table and find the finish very durable and resistant to UV rays. I'm concerned about scuffs and scratches. From what I have read about polyurethane, it is tough and resistance to stains and spills.

Your comments are most appreciated
