The age suggests that it would have to have been refinished if it was a lacquer, since lacquer was not invented until after WWI. I wonder if it could have been recoated with lacquer, and the old shellac was still beneath the top coat. I would guess that it was a shellac and there was some other element at play. Do you know the circumstances of the storage it was in, attic, storage shed? Excess heat will make shellac run, also a fire and extinguisher chemicals can do some odd things. As for the carpet, can you find something similar in an old worn rug from an estate sale? The edges may be useful, and old as well.
