ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Antique Bombe chest

I have 2 lovely antique bombe chests which my husband is trying to restore. They both have inlaid veneers which have bubbled and cracked. I noted one email where you advised squirting glue underneath and clamping with waxed paper. Won't that cause the bubble to crack further? Should the veneer be softened in some way first? If so, how? Soaking, steam iron/hair dryer?

He's already had to massively rebuild part of the back which was filled in a very haphazard fashion with huge amounts of plastic wood. He managed to replace one piece of the back brace with a newly cut piece of mahogany. He was going to paint it like someone has already done to some of the underside areas, but I'm against the paint. The new piece of wood looks very much like the rest, which is unfinished on the underside.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanx, Karen
