oak staircase

Hi, We have a very large carved staircase,house was built in 1896,it has alot of dark dirt in it that is almost impossible to remove.It actually is same as the floors which are golden in color.Is it possable to get staircase back to original without sanding?I couldn't go through the mess of sanding all over again.Any special cleaners we could use?Please help.
