Wipe it down with lacquer thinner if there is an old finish that you want off, if there is a good finish, then paint thinner and a soft clean cotton cloth will do. Once the old finish if off or you are satisfied that the brass is bare metal try Tarnix to remove the tarnish, then use Simichrome to shine followed by paint thinner to clean off ony chemicles and then, avoiding hand contact, spray on a good coat of brass lacquer, to prevent re-tarnishing..
