Thanks for the advice about the harp (as apparently that's what it's called) and the stain. May I pick your brain a little more? Is an "NGR stain" something I will be able to find at a place like Lowe's or Home Depot? Does it matter what kind of product I use to prepare the piece before I use the stain? That is, could I just use a brand name refinishing product, like Formby's?

I'm also considering just painting it and giving the piece a rubbed black look instead of staining. (As you can tell, I am a total beginner.)
