ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

One problem that I have always found to be vexing has been the need to reproduce the aged look that develops on the unfinished areas of an antique piece, such need arising from having to replace wood during a restoration or, as in the problem I now face, having to coordinate the look of some new pine shelves and drawers that have been added to the interior of a very old (early 18th century) Spanish armoire. I'm not talking about "Pumpkin Pine" or "Honey Pine" or any such thing, but the natural sort of gray/tan matte look of the interior or back panel of an old piece that has never been finished. I've never been satisfied with the look of stains or dyes or anything I've tried, and am curious if anyone can suggest a solution.
