A paint stripper will do the job best and save most of the patina as well. Electric sanders can be a problem if you aren't accustomed to them, you should be able to get good results with a 120 grit hand sand, there isn't a great need for a lot of sanding on previously finished wood. Follow that with some 150 grit and clean off all the dust, then choose a stain color. A Danish Oil applied with 0000 steel wool will give nice results, then wipe off all the excess and allow to dry for a day, repeat this and wait 2 days before waxing. Apply at least three coats of wax in the first three months, then every six months or when ever it starts to wear down. Dispose of all oily rags by soaking in water first to avoid spontanious combustion.
