On anything except an 'honest to goodness' oil finish I would suggest paint thinner. It won't cut shellac, lacquer, varnish or (heaven forbid it should be on an antique) polyurethane once the finish has cured. It will remove dirt, oil and grease, as well as most waxes. In my shop I use Naptha, which is just a more refined paint thinner with the added benefit of leaving no residue.
