If by PEG you mean polyethelene glycol - that's what I'd use. It penetrates just as well, and isn't nearly as messy as linseed oil. It also is not prone to spontaneous combustion as linseed oil is. I'd apply a coat daily for a week to make certain it absorbs as much as it can.
