Graniteware and a 19th century well bucket

My husband was asked what he wanted from his grandmother's estate. He wanted the old well bucket and some graniteware. The graniteware seems to be in pretty good condition except that it is very dirty and some of the pieces have slight chips that show a bit of rust on the edges. The well bucket is in great shape except that now that it is out of the well the wood is drying out and the forged rings holding it together are getting loose. Should I oil it or treat it with PEG?
