old partners desk that needs help!

I have an old partners desk that needs SOMETHING done to it. I'm not sure the body needs refinishing yet (I'm going to try to clean it first) but my questions are these:

1) The fronts of the drawers are veneered. There are cracks only in the finish. Will paint remover be ok to use to remove the old finish or is there something specific I should use on veneered furniture? Will paint remover loosen the glue beneath the veneer?

2) The desk sits on ankles. One of them has broken off. If I find I need to refinish, should I repair the break before removing the old finish? At what point during the refinishing process should this repair be made?
