It depends on what caused the dark spots the most common cause is water and can be bleached out using a concentrate solution oo Oxalic Acid also called woob bleach. Bleach the entire top and neutralize with thorough water rinse and wipe dry then air dry in the shade or indoors. If the wood still remains to dark you may have a stain adde to the wood which can often be washed out with 50/50 mixture of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol apply it with 00 steel wool squeezed out until it just stops dripping wet entire surface if possible and wipe dry with paper towel. Wear rubber gloves, goggle and work in WELL ventilated area.
