The black color on your piano is probably a combination of things. The original finish itself has darkened and softened which has allowed dirt and dust to adhere to the finish further darkening the finish. The coal fire may have contributed to this by heating and softening the finish and contributing soot and dust to bond to it. I sounds like you hav a mahogany finished piano under all of the crud and such. You can clean the finish with mild soap and water use a damp rag or sponge rinse and dry with paper towel. This will clean the piano, but it will peobably remain quite dark unless you want to use some aggresive chemical which will remove the upper layer of finish an bring it back to something closer to its original color.
