removing black color from old piano

I have an old piano (early 1900s) that is a shiny black except for a few areas where a reddish wood that seems to match the piano stool shows through. A relative thinks it might have been blackened by being near a coal fired stove for years. Do I dare try to remove the black, and how would I do this? Tanks for yor help!
