Paper Stuck to Table

I have an antique table which used to belong to my grandmother. I had a plant sitting on it with a piece of flat cardboard under it. When I removed the plant, much to my surprise and horror, the cardboard stuck to the tabletop. I tried to peel it up, but it seems to be part of the surface now. How can I remove the cardboard and repair the finish without having to refinish the entire table?
