paint removal from circ. 1800 stickback windsor chairs

i've just accquired two matching stickback windsor sidechirs. on the bottom of seats are stamped( T C HAYWARD BOSTON). the original black paint is covered with several coats of what appears to be oil paint. am looking for product or technique to remove the unwnated and preserve the wanted.
