French Polish is not a what rather it is a method of appliing shellac by rubbing it on with a pad traditionally made with a cotton core wrappped in linen. It is rubbed almost dry so there is just a slight tail of wet behind pad. Pumice or rotten stone is sprinkled on the surface ahead of the pad to help fill the pores in the wood. Properly done it is one of the prettiest finishes.
