The ends of the siderails can be repaired aby boring them and putting in dowels the boring the dowels to take the screws. I'm not sure what you mean by veneer tape. Could you clarify that please? To use this bed with a mordern sping and mattress set you probably need to have new side rails made, but save the old ones please. If the split in the headboard is big enough to put in a shim that will give you a much better repair than glue alone.
