First, I have to assume you use the term 'varnish' generically. If the piece was factory made this century, the finish is almost certainly lacquer, unless it has been refinished since. What kind of stains (what do they look like)? You can test the finish by rubbing a rag dampened with lacquer thinner on an inconspicuous spot. If the rag starts to 'drag', you've got a lacquer finish. Try to describe more fully what the stains look like and whether the finish tests 'positive' as lacquer.
