removing stains in varnish

I have been given a dresser that I want to use as a feature when you enter the house but I would like the piece to really look good. At the moment it has stains on the surfaces that have been used by the family and I would like to know if I can remove them with out having to strip the old varnish and re-varnish the entire piece as the rest of the dresser is in good condition and I don't know if it could be matched as the colour is quite unique. If you can help me it would be greatly appreciated.
